The Power of @twitter ◊ Resistance is Futile
Tuesday, August 31, 2010
While there are many people who are still against social networking, *bbm confused face* I’m a huge fan. Being on Twitter for close to a year and a half has helped me spark new friendships, solidify others, establish my online brand and make great connections. Case in point, my friend @jayfierce saw a tweet from @AdrienField, the fashion market editor for Vibe Magazine who needed an assistant for a Miami video shoot. He immediately thought of me and started to blow my phone up.
After three attempts, @jayfierce was finally able to reach me. What can I say; I’m a busy man! He informed me about the opportunity and provided the contact information. After doing my research, I sent @AdrienField an e-mail expressing my interest in working with him if he felt my skill set matched his need. He replied, “You might be over qualified given your portfolio, but I would love to have you on set.” And I exclaimed, “As long as I’m not getting the crew coffee and doughnuts, I’m down.” I know @AdrienField was probably thinking, #ohyoufancyhuh, lol.
At any rate, after a few more e-mail exchanges, I found out I would work with him styling the six featured girls in Trey Songz’s newest smash hit, Bottoms Up featuring Nicki Minaj, as well as Trey’s new single, Can’t Be Friends. Can you say, “Excited much?!?!” All I could do was thank the Lord above for continuously blessing me with these opportunities … oh, and @twitter too.
Video shoots are a laborious process. Some can span over two days and there’s a lot, I mean, A LOT of waiting between sets. However, when you see the final product, it’s almost always worth it.
Check out the season finale of Trey Songz: My Moment tonight on BET, 10 p.m. ET/9 CT, where you can see behind the scenes footage of Bottoms Up. View the full video below; the girls look quite delectable if I do say so myself! #YUUUUUUP

Happy Birthday MJ ◊ A Fashion Story
Sunday, August 29, 2010
Where were you when news broke that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson died? I was in Harlem, NY, home of the Black Renaissance, just one block from the legendary Apollo Theatre. True to form, Rev. Al Sharpton was one of the first figureheads on scene and quickly consoled a growing crowd of devastated fans. Stereos from every corner played MJ tunes while nostalgia filled the air as people cried, laughed and danced in the streets. It was a true life and legacy celebration of the greatest entertainer of all time. *pulls sequined glove out of pocket* Of course, I had to join in and city boy slide one time for ya’ boy *in my best South Florida accent* as Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough played in my head. #iLoveFAMU
I was also in the middle of my first lifestyle shoot with VH1 & CNN correspondent, not to mention huge Michael Jackson fan, Janell Snowden. She has to be one of the coolest and most supportive people I’ve ever met. One look into the shoot, Janell’s phone started to blow up with calls from CNN to be on a panel within the hour. In my mind, I’m thinking, “Party done”. *Jamaican accent* “This shoot is about be rescheduled.” However, in a world/city of people that jumped in reaction to MJ’s death, Janell insisted we stay the course, demonstrating our mutual passion for fashion. *bbm surprised face* Not many people in Janell’s position would have passed up that opportunity. It spoke volumes about her character as a journalist and person. It’s a pleasure to work in this industry with people that share your passion; the end product is always better. Check out Janell’s fashion story with a special MJ tribute in the last look.

I need those purple shoes in my life!!! I love the outfits in Janell’s photoshoot! Fabulous!
-
Gotta love those YSL’s. The shoes in this shoot had to be my favorite!
-
-
Love, Love, Love the shoes, concepts, & the realism oozing from the beginning photos where residents are “one” and swallowing that dreaded pill that the King of Pop is….gone.
-
Love it!
-
Loving the blue flower dress & the nude shoes.
I remember being at home when I first got the news of MJ. I was actually watching TV and my sis calls from LA. “OMG, people on the streets saying Michael is dead.” Yeah right, I said. Turned on CNN; reports coming that he was in a coma. Yelled at my sis that MJ ain’t dead cause CNN said so. Then I went on TMZ and it was confirmed, that infact, he was dead. I was flabbergasted (we’re gonna overlook the fact that I believe TMZ over CNN). -
Love, Love, Love the shoes, concepts, & the realism oozing from the beginning photos where residents gather as “one” (i.e.no beef, no hating, nada) and swallowing that dreaded pill that the KIng of Pop is….gone.
p.s. im absolutely IN LOVE with those shoes ft’d in the last 2 looks!!!!

After a two-month hiatus from Miami, I returned to the Creative Hostel to continue work on launching my website and blog. Unbeknownst to me, Toye Adedipe, a fellow FAMU alum and celebrity stylist, had taken up residence at the Hostel for the weekend. He was in town to style Island Def Jam recording artist Git Fresh Crew’s debut album artwork, and video for their hit single, She Be Like. *singing* Bom Bom Bom…1st round!
While on location styling the seven looks for the album, Toye called and asked if I could come on set to help out for awhile. At that point, I had been up all night putting the finishing touches on my site and blog, but nonetheless, I obliged and hopped in a cab to downtown Miami. It was a great opportunity I was not going to pass up. Besides, sleep is for the weary, and I have moves to make, lol.
After a $20, three-pack cab ride (Sidebar: As a freelance stylist, I count every penny, and equate it to packs of bacon or a meal. $20 = 3 really good packs of bacon or 3.5 meals), I arrived on set and immediately asked Toye how I could be of assistance. Tape shoes? Don’t mind if I do! I have a patent pending technique that will ensure most shoes can go back to the store after being worn. *bbm lips are sealed face* In the middle of my fourth pair of shoes, Toye comes over and tells me the creative direction for tomorrow’s video has changed. He has to stay on set to finish styling the other looks and needs me to go shopping. Toye hands me the keys to a rental car, $2,500 in cash, and gives me a brief description of the three-member group’s aesthetic.
Can we say OVERWHELMED? It was the middle of rush hour traffic, and I had just been tasked with getting three looks apiece with options within a specific color range for each member of Git Fresh Crew. With a smile on my face and book bag on my back, I headed to the mall to GET ‘ER DONE. Needless to say I shut the mall down. I wanted to make sure Toye was in good position to style tomorrow morning because there would be no time for mall runs.
Back at the Hostel, Toye reviewed my pulls and was extremely pleased. A number of looks, including the literal shirt off my back were used in the video. It goes to show that when you’re destined to do anything, your steps are ordered. You just have to be quiet, watch for the signs and follow the path. I could have stayed in DC until I launched my website and blog, however something told me to go to Miami, and I listened.
Check out some behind the scenes pics and the video below….Bing Bing Bing…It’s going down!

Fish, Grits, Bacon & Dream Chasing
Saturday, July 31, 2010
Inspiration comes in the strangest forms. Mine often reveals itself over food
The other day, while making fried whiting, cheddar cheese grits and applewood smoked bacon, it came to me… like an epiphany! *music break* “I think I’m just about over…” Shout out to my tweetheart, Chrisette Michelle. If you follow me on Twitter, then you know how much I love and respect her as an artist.
In the midst of preparing dinner for folks at the creative hostel came my realization: I’ve been so excited about the recent growth and development of my career, that I started to get hustle mixed up with stupidity. When you’re passionate about anything, it not only resonates with you, but your circle. Your family and friends will become your support system and personal PR team. I can’t begin to elaborate on the number of clients I’ve acquired and connections I’ve made because of my circle. They are apart of my success.
As a fashion stylist & creative director, one of my immediate goals is to have my work published in a magazine. Instead of letting it happen organically, I began to chase a tear sheet – an example of your work that can be torn from a publication – by any means necessary. *adjusts Malcolm X glasses*
I set up a meeting with a photographer who had strained relationships in many facets of the fashion industry. His reputation and ego proceeded himself – which sometimes is not a bad thing because you know what you’re getting before the train comes. His goal was to start a beach inspired fashion publication and I saw myself becoming an integral part of the staff in the magazine’s infancy stages. Half way through the meeting, my soul was unsettled. At that point I was aware this new relationship would be toxic. However, I wanted that tear sheets so I pressed forward and agreed to take on a number of tasks, despite photographer’s demeaning tone.
So as the grease began to pop, I realized I made it this far from sweat equity, intuition, keen business practices and great support system. My guerrilla approach could have affected my brand, integrity and progress to date. Instead I decided to do what Will Smith so eloquently stated in his video on my previous post, “You don’t try to build a wall. You don’t set out to build a wall. You don’t say, I’m going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that’s ever been built. You don’t start there. You say, I’m going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid. And you do that every single day and soon you have a wall.”
Life’s funny that way…wouldn’t you know it, less than a week later, the fashion gods shined their Ferragamos down on me. *bbm party face* I will be working with two publications in August who’s brands I respect and admire. I won’t say much…now. I’ll let the tear sheets speak for themselves. #POW

This post spoke to me man! I’m in this place currently in my career, learning to take steps that are of the highest integrity, and that serve others as well as myself. Trying to discern next steps in this business is not always the most clear. I’m learning to trust the passion and the gift God has given me while also working hard and efficiently towards my goal…hustling! Keep it up Apuje, I love these posts

Side note…..you should get some of your food pics published too….Yummy!-
Thanks LaTonya! I never thought about getting the food pics published. I guess I was trying to stay in my lane and focus on styling people and not food lol. Who knows what God has in store for me next.

Stripes, Stripes & More Stripes
Monday, July 19, 2010
Summer 2010 trends puts a spin on military fashion for men and women. While navy and white stripes are a must for the look, the real key to Summer’s take on nautical stripes is that they dominate the outfit. Check out the 1st look in the pictures below of Brazilian Model, Leonardo who is signed to Wilhelmina Models.
This was Leonardo’s first test shoot, needless to say he was a natural and pulled every look and story we pitched at him. I was enthused to be apart of this process, because Leonardo decided to take a leap of faith and follow his dream. He quit his well paying job, moved to Miami to pursue modeling full time. Leonardo has already booked some amazing jobs. I look forward to seeing how far his career goes.

You have definitely brightened my hazy morning w/ this fine ass man! Oh my. I hope he has a great career to ’cause I wouldn’t mind seeing him 24/7. Now back to fashion, I’m so down for the military look. When done right, it can look so classy. Funny enough, I haven’t tried it this summer.
-
I love the military look this season! It’s a trend that’s very easy to incorporate into your current wardrobe.
-
I really appreciate that your take on the military wasn’t army greens. The Navy would take their hats off to your direction man. These are some good shots. Is the blazer top from Zara?
-
Yep, you’re right Jayar. The charcoal suit with the black piping did come from Zara.
-
-
Wow, you did a great job with this one! The clothes complimented the models good looks perfectly! Keep up the good work.
-
i already told u on twitter, but i thought i’d comment too (i know i love comments). you’re blog is beautiful and this model is a hottie! keep up the great work!

Thanks so much Lachelle! For someone who has known for since the 8th grade you’ve seen the progression. I appreciate the constant support.

Chicken & Waffles ◊ Red Velvet That Is…
Thursday, July 1, 2010
I’ve been searching for the perfect first Red Velvet post and by George I think I’ve found it…SCORE!
Scouring the web about a week ago, I landed on my good friend, Jennifer’s Blog, JG Runs the Kitchen and low and behold she had a recipe for Red Velvet Waffles. I literally died and went to food heaven, because if you’ve ever eaten her cooking you know she’s a BEAST in the kitchen. Too late fellas, she’s already boo-ed up with “The Beau”, but I digressed. I suddenly felt inspired; I’ve never made waffles from scratch. I’m a Bisquick man myself, but I decided to give the recipe a try with my own twist. The end result was Double-Dipped Fried Chicken & Red Velvet Waffles with a Pecan Honey Cream Cheese Butter.
This started off as a meal for 3 people at the Creative Hostel where I reside whenever I’m working in Miami. By the end of the night 7 people had consumed every bite of my food. My friends and I were up to 3AM discussing our dreams, obstacles, the journey and defining our dash. Will Smith’s video about Mindset Wisdom provided the perfect background for our conversation. Its a must see…and I’ll leave it at that.
I sit in awe when I look at the talent that surrounds me. We all encourage each other, but most of all hold each other accountable to our dreams. Stepping out on faith is difficult but you have to start somewhere. Have you taken your first step…
***Special Thanks to Tia Smith for helping me style my food and pics. Look for her food blog very soon.

LOVE IT!
-
You just bought your friend Jennifer a new blog viewer. I’ve been looking for a place with tasty recipes to try. YES!
-
So since I was there I felt inclined to confirm that the meal was delicious. I have never understood where the phrase “(insert pronoun) put their foot all in it” came from but Apuje did that. Wow – I have been spending too much time in Miami with these guys. The chicken was fried so perfectly we even made a vegetarian have a relapse. JG thanks for providing Apuje with the inspiration for cooking that meal last night, it was a nice catalyst for a ‘creatives’ convo.
-
I hope it tasted good. It certainly looks fantastic!!! Thanks Apuje for the shout out! <3 <3!!
-

Thanks Val! You didn’t know I could throw down in the kitchen. I don’t do it often but when I do, I does it big lol!

-
Got to tell you this hit home. Time to start really working towards the movement. Wish I was there for the 3am convo. You know me and food, I might of had to pass on the fried and smother, but who knows.
-
This video hit home for me as well E, that’s why I had to post it and hope others were inspired. Idk, I think you might have taken a piece of the chicken. It was so good even a vegetarian ate some lol.

3whobelieve inc. ◊ i too can be president
Wednesday, June 30, 2010
September of 2009, I was asked to style and direct my first campaign for 3whobelieve inc. *bbm dancing face* with no budget and a week to execute in a city I did not live *bbm straight face*. Initially, this seemed like a daunting task, but hey, I graduated from a HBCU (Historically Black College or University) and have seen tougher times *waits for AMEN Corner to chime in & gives neighbor a high 5*. But honestly, what compelled me to take on this project was the message behind burgeoning brand and the story of its inception.
3whobelieve inc. was created by 3 friends, Bernice, Joy and Kristin who found inspiration and hope in the new birth of freedom that now offers opportunities without limits to all Americans, regardless of race, creed, or color. The core mission of their brand is to design clothing that promotes positive messages to all people with a twist of style, funk, and social awareness. In addition to its clothing line, 3whobelieve inc. provides charitable funds to creative minds and effective institutions committed to empowering, uplifting, and inspiring people to be catalysts for positive change.
Check out this video for a behind the scenes view into how the project came together.
Video: i too can be president.
***Special thanks to Photographer, Elton Anderson, Make-Up Artist, Mia Scott, Videographer, George Twopointoh, and Lauren Grant for making this day possible.

An Open Letter to Pork Bacon
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
Dear PORK Bacon,
Ahhhh, the other white meat. Some may be troubled by our love affair, and you know what, I’m ok with that. Many of my family and friends have abandoned you over the years and I bid them adieu and say, “Good reddens.” Others have tried to replace you; turkey and beef substitutes just wont due. You’ve kept it fresh and new, constantly re-inventing yourself. Applewood Smoked, Hickory Smoked, Maple Brown Sugar Cured, I love them all.
I like to prepare you a bed, covered with aluminum foil. Placing you side by side as I drizzle my Aunt’s syrup (Aunt Jemima) all over your body. Then I crack black pepper over your skin just for a little character. Out of a 375 degree oven, you look delectable. All I can say is nom nom nom *Cookie Monster voice* My Boo, the syrup is glistening all over your body. I say, the syrup is just glistening all over your body. You’re caramelized, salty, a bit sweet, smoky, and both meaty and crisp. What else can a man ask for?
I look forward to the time when I can enjoy you everyday, but for now and doctor’s order, I will consume you in moderation…meaning every other day and twice on Saturday.
With Love,
Me

You should be ashamed of yourself. LOL this almost sounded like Porn! (Good Porn might I add)
-
Dude you are too many things!!!!!! One the one hand I am smiling and laughing because I also enjoy food with a passion that is emotional, physical, and cerebral all at the same time. I also reject this preposterous propaganda perpetuated by Dr. Ian Smith and new blacks about how bad pork is. But then when I scroll down and see the pictures with the Aunt Jemima in the back ground, I can’t help but shake my head squint my face, tilt my head and say…really Apuje, really?!?!? All while LMAO. You have now made me hungry for some kind of something with Bacon on it!

Spec, I knew you would appreciate this post. Especially the way Aunt Irene and Pops be cooking.
